Is a doctorate the right thing for me? How do I get started and how do I organize my "project doctorate"? Which financing options do I have? Frühjahrsakademie addresses advanced Master's students interested in a doctorate and doctoral researchers at the beginning of their doctorate.

What does Frühjahrsakademie offer?

The interdisciplinary Frühjahrsakademie provides support in the decision-making process and in the initial phase of the doctorate.

On the first day, you will receive a comprehensive overview of doctoral research. A panel discussion with professors from the UA Ruhr universities will focus on questions concerning the supervision. Subsequently, experienced early career researchers will give insights into the particularities of doctorates in the respective subject groups in three panels. In the afternoon, a workshop will provide essential formal and organisational basics of doctoral research.

On the second and third day of the event, you can train key competencies for a successful start to your doctorate in interdisciplinary workshops: From writing an exposé, to self and time management, to good scientific practice. If specific questions from the introductory day have remained unanswered, we can clarify these in individual and small group consultations that take place parallel to the workshops.

During the networking lunch, you will have the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with your colleagues. You can also explore the support services for early career researchers within the University Alliance Ruhr. For example, contact persons of the university libraries are available to answer your questions.

Who can participate?

Advanced Master's students interested in a doctorate and early doctoral researchers of all subject fields of Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The language of Frühjahrsakademie is German.

Next date: The next Frühjahrsakademie will take place at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 24 to 26 March 2020. The registration will be open from 20 February 2020, 10 am. Deadline for registration is 28 February, 4 pm.

The Frühjahrsakademie will take place from 24 to 26 March 2020 at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Essen Campus, Building S06).

You can individually arrange your workshop program. In the case of parallel offers, you have to choose between a workshop or a consultation. Please click on the respective workshop title for a detailed workshop description.

Registration is required for participation in the Frühjahrsakademie. The registration form will be activated on Thu, 20 February 2020, 10 am, on this page in the "Registration" section. The deadline for registration is 28 February, 4 pm.

In den drei Fach-Panels geht es nach einer kurzen Einführung in die spezifischen Besonderheiten von Promotionen in der jeweiligen Fachgruppe um die konkreten Fragen der Teilnehmer*innen. Sie werden beantwortet von erfahrenen Nachwuchs­wissen­schaftler*innen und Expert*innen der Graduierten­einrichtungen. Die Teilnehmer*innen sind daher eingeladen, eigene Fragen zu stellen und mit den Impuls­gebern*innen zu diskutieren.

Organizational notes on registration

The registration for 24 March is for the whole day. You can choose the subject panel according to your field of study. On 25 and 26 March, you can put together your own individual workshop program. For the parallel offers you have to choose between a workshop or a consultation. It is not possible to take advantage of both at the same time.

Please note that the number of participants per workshop is limited and workshops may be fully booked before the registration deadline. In this case we will set up a waiting list.

Participation in the Frühjahrsakademie is free of charge (incl. networking lunch). If you need child care, please note this in the comment field of the registration form.
