Is a doctorate the right thing for me? How do I get started and how do I organize my "project doctorate"? Which financing options do I have? Frühjahrsakademie addresses advanced Master's students interested in a doctorate and doctoral researchers at the beginning of their doctorate.

What does Frühjahrsakademie offer?

The interdisciplinary Frühjahrsakademie provides support in the decision-making process and in the initial phase of the doctorate.

On the first day, you will receive a comprehensive overview of doctoral research. A panel discussion with professors from the UA Ruhr universities will focus on questions concerning the supervision. Subsequently, experienced early career researchers will give insights into the particularities of doctorates in the respective subject groups in three panels. In the afternoon, a workshop will provide essential formal and organisational basics of doctoral research.

On the second and third day of the event, you can train key competencies for a successful start to your doctorate in interdisciplinary workshops: From writing an exposé, to self and time management, to good scientific practice. If specific questions from the introductory day have remained unanswered, we can clarify these in individual and small group consultations that take place parallel to the workshops.

During the networking lunch, you will have the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with your colleagues. You can also explore the support services for early career researchers within the University Alliance Ruhr. For example, contact persons of the university libraries are available to answer your questions.

Who can participate?

Advanced Master's students interested in a doctorate and early doctoral researchers of all subject fields of Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The language of Frühjahrsakademie is German.

Please note: The Frühjahrsakademie 2020 (24-26 March2020) at the University of Duisburg-Essen cannot take place as planned. Please find further information in the "Program" section on this page.

Unfortunately, the Frühjahrsakademie 2020 (24-26 March 2020, Campus Essen) cannot take place as planned. After careful consideration we have decided to cancel the event in order to prevent a possible spread of the coronavirus. We deeply regret this.

With this decision, we are following the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute and the public health authorities to assess the risk of a possible transmission of the virus at events with many people and, if necessary, to cancel the event in order to delay the spread of the virus as much as possible.

All registered persons were informed by e-mail on 12 March 2020 about the cancellation.

If you have an urgent need for advice, please contact the Graduate Center at your university to arrange an alternative date for a consultation. You will find your local contact person here.

For those who have signed up (or are on the waiting list) for the workshop "Von der Idee zum Promotionsexposé: Schreibwerkstatt", the trainer Dr. Jutta Wergen will offer an equivalent online course as a substitute on 25 or 26 March. Mrs. Wergen will contact you separately by e-mail for further details. Unfortunately we cannot offer a virtual substitute for the other workshops.

Registration for this year's Frühjahrsakademie is closed.
