Intense discussions and international guests – that was what this year's Sommerabend of the Research Academy Ruhr offered on 26 June 2019 in the Beckmanns Hof at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Around 75 researchers met in summery weather to discuss the question "How much international visibility does a successful academic career need?”. As several international guests from the current Research Explorer Ruhr program were present, the entire discussion took place in English.

Interesting insights and important impulses came from the panelists Prof. Dr. Benjamin Bechtel (RUB), Prof. Dr. Jonas Rose (RUB), Prof. Dr. Elisabeth de Boer (RUB) and Prof. Dr. Dominik Rumlich (University of Paderborn), all of whom were recently appointed professors and were thus able to share valuable experience. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein, speaker of the Research Academy Ruhr, different career paths and cultural differences were highlighted.

The subsequent snack offered a good opportunity to make contacts across universities and to further deepen the discussions.

The next Sommerabend will take place on 24 June 2020.
